In Mexico, these ancient beliefs have mixed with Christianity to form a unique culture. Of course in Christianity butterflies represent rebirth and spiritual awakening. One celebration that really stands out is "Dia de los Muertos" or “Day of the Dead” which is a mixture of native beliefs, and European pagan and Christian beliefs. Just as Mexicans begin to celebrate "Dia de los Muertos" millions of monarch butterflies start to descend on the Mexican state of Michoacan. The Purhepecha people, who number roughly 200,000, make up the majority of the population that inhabit the dozen or so sites visited by the monarchs. Although the Purphecha are one of the few peoples in central Mexico to have successfully fought off the Aztec empire, they do share some of their beliefs including the one that butterflies are the returning souls of the dead.

Butterflies have played a large role in the myth and folklore of our past and continue to fascinate and delight people today. In the future, they may end up playing an important role as a symbol of rainforest conservation efforts. To read more about that, please visit Saving the Rainforest.
